It’s been a while since I was able to focus on writing in my blog, but there is no better time than now. In January of this year, I had a conversation with my publishing company, Cosby Media Productions, more importantly with my brother in writing, Braxton Cosby. I let him know that I had an issue that I have never experienced before with my writing. I had a huge gap between my stories and I was having an issue connecting my fourth book with my upcoming fifth book in the Menzuo series. We sat and brainstormed for a while and he asked me, what was something that I always wanted to do with my stories? The lightbulb went off. I always wanted to create a comic book.
The origins of Menzuo was supposed to be in comic book form, but back in 1996, my best friend, Marcus McDowell passed away due to his battle with cancer and that dream fell to the wayside because I cannot draw. I ended up turning the comic book into a novel, which has done amazingly over the years, but in the back of my head, I always wanted to complete the dream that was started…create a Menzuo comic book. With the mustard seed planted in both of our heads, Braxton and I started to research how we could create comic books adapted from our novels. When you speak something into existence, it’s sure to rise when you have motivated people in your corner.
No less than a week went by and I’m on the phone talking to Braxton and he had already put the plan in motion. He met with several illustrators and studied how we could create a comic. To tell you that my mind was blown away would be an understatement. There was no turning back now, we had to do it. There was one obstacle in our way, paying the illustrators to do the work. We had to come up with at least $2,500.00 apiece, but as determined and motivated as we were, we knew that we could do it. As our excitement grew with our new journey, two other authors from CMP joined us on this journey, Laurence St. John and Daniel Peyton, they also had a dream of creating a comic book for their series. Our goal now went from raising $5,000.00 to $10,000.00, how were we going to do this? A Kickstarter campaign it is.
The plan was in place, the four of us sat down and discussed the sixty day roll out of the campaign and put it in place. We set a goal of raising $10,000.00 in sixty days…easy right? This was a daunting task to undertake, but in my mind, I wasn’t going to fail. I treated this like a football game. The ball was in my hands and I had to score. Each and every day, I set out to hit a goal of raising at least $250.00 by contacting people that I knew and generating as much buzz as possible about what was to come. I had to get people to believe in what I wanted to do and the product that would be completed once our goal was met. Low and behold, so many people started to donate to our campaign. We pushed and pushed and never looked back. Braxton tackled his people and Laurence and Dan did the same. This four-headed monster was unstoppable. Before the end of our sixty day campaign, we exceeded our goal...CONGRATULATIONS!
Because of this success, we helped to launch our new line under Cosby Media Productions with StarChild Comics. Our four comic will be the feature books that will be released in early 2022. I am truly blessed to have a publishing company that believes in me, and a friend who will keep you focused throughout the process. Braxton Cosby is a true leader and also a person who knows how to allow his authors to lead him down a road to success. What I have learned through this processes is that you have to be guided by faith, and you have to be willing to work for what you want. Being an author isn’t easy, it more than likely won’t make you rich, but what it will do is motivate others to be great and live their own dreams, I am living proof of it!
Every now and again, you get to meet someone who has the same passion and dreams about becoming a great author. To become the type of author that inspires people to do great things in the arts as well as in life. This is what I have seen with Dr. Braxton Cosby. Yes, the nephew of icon, Dr. Bill Cosby. Following under his huge footsteps is no small undertaking, but Braxton is making his path and it is being recognized globally. I had the greatest opportunity to interview Braxton and I know that what you will read will inspire you as much as it has for me.
Braxton, please tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Braxton Cosby and I am the author of multiple titles, and am also the CEO of Cosby Media Productions. We publish other authors and their works and our passion is to provide works that are family-friendly and that speak messages to people all around the world; especially young folks so that they can be inspired.
What inspired you to write your book?
Well, I actually was ‘called’ to write one day in church. Basically, I offered myself to be used by God and ask Him what He wanted me to do. I clearly heard a voice tell me to write a book. Since that time, I began the process of investigating what it meant to be a writer and what challenges I could expect. Once I got that understanding, I pressed forward – learned a ton in the process, and am still learning – and have not looked back since. The books I’ve written are works that I am very proud of and I don’t regret a single page.
What is your latest project that you are working on?
I’m currently in the beginnings of re-launching Protostar: Book 1 of The Star-Crossed Saga (a young adult, sci-fi-romance series) in preparation for the unveiling of the sequel Supernova in June. I and very excited because it is a new facelift for Protostar with cover and interior (some storytelling changes that make the story much more streamlined) and it is being published by my company and the close nit association to Tate Publishing allows me to have full access to retail stores and national media.
How did you come up with the title?
Each book in the series has a double meaning. Protostar is the birth of a star and it is also the first stage of the evolution of the main character Sydney in her star-child growth, giving her access to powers equivalent to the stars themselves. Supernova is the greatest cataclysmic event in the universe – a time of great destruction and it is also the next stage in a star-child’s evolution. Both titles have huge indications as to what the reader can expect in each book.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Yes, two. The importance of accountability – making a choice and staying with it – and the limitless power of pure love.
Can you share a little of your current work with us?
Absolutely, here is the prologue of Protostar that sets the tone for the book. I hope you like it.
Seventeen Years Ago . . .
Sarah stood atop the mountainside, looking out into the sky. The expanse of rich darkness and scattered stars reminded her of home. She desired to return there someday, but knew that she couldn’t. Things had been set in motion. There was no way to turn back now, even if she tried.
Still, something within her body felt wrong.
Is this the right place, right time? she thought.
Maybe the details got skewed, blended together, lost amongst all the immaculate planning. Even they were known to be wrong sometimes. She hoped against all hope that they weren’t. But stars never lie. She gazed into the sky. Their configuration—constellation after constellation, linked like a chain, with the Star of David perched in the center—was picture perfect. This had to be it. All she had to do now . . . was wait.
And wait she did.
Hours passed as the moon slid by. Just as her mind began to fill with doubt, it finally happened. The ground underneath her shifted, rocking her from side to side, up and down, as the stars burned brightly. She braced herself, running down from the mountain the best she could. Her old bony legs wobbled, struggling to keep her upright as she negotiated the uneven layers of rock and grass.
A loud crashing noise like the banging of cymbals lit her ears on fire as the sky parted, sending a tiny bright shard screaming across the black canvas, growing larger as it drew nearer.
Her eyes snapped to the road—the projected point of impact. But one detail had been missed.
Someone else was there.
A vehicle sped down the dusty road, on a straight collision course with the object, which continued to grow larger and larger as time ticked on.
Sarah waved her hands as wildly, screaming, “Hey, you have to stop!”
But her screams went unnoticed. She gasped as the object crashed to the earth, tearing the car into pieces. She squinted, filtering the heat from the explosion as she moved in closer to examine the wreckage.
A gaping hole where the roof used to be greeted her, revealing the charred remains of another passenger. Sarah scanned the rest of the vehicle for survivors, finding only the shell of the driver white-knuckled to the steering wheel.
Her heart dropped.
The muffled sound of a baby crying tickled her ears, urging her to examine the object in the passenger seat more closely. It resembled a meteor, covered in craters and black ash that sent her into a coughing panic. A small crack in the outer shell provided just enough space for her to look inside.
She grabbed the door handle with both hands—wrinkled fingers trembling as she ripped the car door free—tossing it by the wayside. With a sigh of relief, she peeled back the shell. Black smoke stung her eyes while her hands burned from the heat. But Sarah ignored them both, pressing forward with her mission. Nothing would stop her now. With wet eyes, she smiled, finally finding what she had so desperately been looking for—a baby girl.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
The struggle of providing the right amount of detail where and when appropriate and then trimming it down as not to slow the pacing of the story.
What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, and logistical) in bringing it to life?
Actually, I am a huge science fanatic and I became fascinated with the stars. The power, the mystery and the legacy of stars is phenomenal. Once I came up with the story arc, I realized how amazing the tale could be because of the vast amounts of research out there supporting the enigmatic assumptions we make. The unpredictability and lore of the universe was mind-blowing. All I wanted to do was build my own world and create characters that people could relate to, love and hate.
Do you have any advice for other writers?
Never stop writing and never stop editing. I swear you could make a zillion revisions to a work, but that only shows how much you want to get it right. The drive to put together the perfect story continues to encourage me. And the more I read, the better the ideas I glean from other writers concerning style and story elements.
Where can readers purchase your book/books?
Protostar will be available on ebook 6/16/2015 and both that and Supernova will be available on ebook/paperback on 6/30/2015.
Links for the book can be found on Amazon on my author page or at Cosby Media Productions:

I recently had the opportunity to interview author, Sonya McGirt. Sonya is new to the Cosby Media Productions family and I know you all will be ready to get your hands on her first book, “My Journey-Living Through Christ Victoriously.”
Keshawn Dodds: Hello, Sonya, tell us a little about yourself? Sonya McGirt: I am married with three daughters and two step-children. I have a Master's Degree in Social Work and my husband and I run a center that assist homeless and those less fortunate.
Keshawn: Wow! That is amazing, I can tell from the field that you are in. You are a very giving person. Thank you for your service to help the less fortunate. Can you tell us what inspired you to write your book?
Sonya: Years ago I felt in my spirit I was supposed to write a book, but every time I sat down to begin, I could not come up with anything. A year and a half ago I had been praying about it and felt the Holy Ghost speak to me about the direction I was to take. I was on Twitter and seen, Braxton Cosby and noticed he had a publishing company. I asked a few questions and a month or so later I was offered a two year contract.
Keshawn: That is so great to hear. I am happy that Braxton was able to bring you into the Cosby Media Productions, Family. Moving forward, is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Sonya: Yes there is. The message that I hope my readers walk away with is we all have fallen in our life, but through God's grace and forgiveness we can come back stronger than ever.
Keshawn: God be the glory. Can you tell me how you come up with the title for the book?
Sonya: I wrote the whole manuscript not knowing the title of the book until a week or so later. I just knew it was perfect when it came to mind.
Keshawn: That’s sometimes the best way to come up with a title. Once the work is written, it comes to you like lightening. Now, what are some of your current projects?
Sonya: I am currently working on a book about how we allow our mind to be controlled by things other than the Holy Spirit and how those thoughts can actually destroy us if we allow them to. I am also working on a book on marriage.
Keshawn: That is amazing. It’s always nice to see another author so entrenched in their craft. Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
Sonya: I used to love writing and reading as a kid. I would imagine myself in the stories I would read. I also wrote poems and short stories when I was younger.
Keshawn: So your love of writing stems from childhood. It’s important for our youth to be able to get lost in books then later become inspired as adults. I’m happy that was the path that you chose. What was the hardest part of writing your book?
Sonya: Staying focussed!
Keshawn: Isn’t that the truth and straight to the point. No need to explain, we can all understand that. Now, if you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
Sonya: I can't say that I would. I am still on my third edits so it hasn't come out on the stands yet but hoping it won't be much longer.
Keshawn: I’ve been there with our editor, Tamar Hela. Trust me, she will give you the best product possible. Do you have any advice for other writers?
Sonya: Yes I do, don't let anyone tell you that you can't do anything. If we allow ourselves to think negative then only negativity will proceed from us and we start listening to those around us. Just stay focused, sit down and make time to begin your story. The possibilities and endless!
Keshawn: Amen to that. Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers? Sonya: I hope that once the book is available that each and every one that reads it, walks away with a positive experience.
Keshawn: Thank you, Sonya. I cannot wait to get my hands on your book. Good luck with your journey and once again, welcome to the Cosby Media Productions Family.
Website: COMING SOON!!!
Hello everyone, every so often, you get to meet someone who has the same dreams as you and holds the same amount of passion for their work, just like you. Cris Pasqueralle, is that person. He is a very passionate author of an up and coming Young Adult series and I have had the opportunity to interview him today. Below, you can get the answers to our discussion
Tell us a little about yourself?
I am a retired NYC police officer, father of two beautiful daughters, and I live on Long Island NY with my wife Tricia, and my girls.
What inspired you to write your book?
I was inspired to write Destiny Revealed by my daughters. It was their love of fantasy fiction that drew me to the genre. As more and more books about vampires became popular, they urged me to write something about wizards and The Destiny Trilogy was born.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
The main message of Destiny Revealed is the importance of family and friends. A person can grow and learn who they are with help. Nothing has to be done alone. Relying on others, gaining strength and inspiration from them is important in making each or us a strong, caring person.
How did you come up with the title?
While writing Destiny Revealed I saw the story was about fulfilling ones life mission, or destiny. However, in order to do that we must first discover what that destiny is. I broke it down into three parts, and the first is revealing your destiny to yourself. So, Destiny Revealed seemed appropriate.
What are your current projects?
Book one of The Destiny Trilogy will be out this fall, and I am currently working on book three and I have some ideas for a couple of stand-alone novels, and an epic fantasy series that will require a great deal of research.
Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
I've always had a fondness for reading, so I guess my desire to write was born from that and I began to jot down ideas, small stories, even screenplays while still in high school.
What was the hardest part of writing your book?
I think the hardest part of writing The Destiny Trilogy was to keep it consistent and not to reveal too much. Planning for three books and writing one at a time can be difficult as you try to stretch and add things without giving away what's going to happen two books later.
If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
I'm pretty happy with the way Destiny Revealed turned out so, I don't think I'd change anything.
Do you have any advice for other writers?
My advice to other writers would be to read everything, not just the genre you write in and to keep plugging along. Others will say give up, rejection notices will pile up, but just have faith and keep going. It took me thirty years to get published, so I'm proof the perseverance pays off.
Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
First off, I'd like to thank all those who purchased Destiny Revealed, your support truly means a lot. Second, because I write for a young audience I'd like to just encourage them to keep reading. Reading builds vocabulary, develops the imagination, and leads to success.

New Beginnings for the Menzuo S.W. Series
In August of 2014, I was honored to sign a book deal with Cosby Media Productions. I spoke with Leon Cosby and his cousin, Braxton Cosby about the possibility of publishing my Menzuo S.W. series. After our conversation, we came to find out that this was the perfect fit for the all of us. The contract was drawn up and the ball began to roll.
Over the next couple of months, I prepared myself by going over all of the books that I had written within the series and wanted to make sure that I was ready for whatever Leon and Braxton was going to present to me. As an advocate for education, I quickly came to find out that they were on the same mission. These gentlemen were on a mission to change the mindset of our youth and also adult to re-discover the love of reading and also strengthen literacy throughout the country. This was the same path that I was traveling down, but with little help or direction.
Knowing the Cosby brand (from their uncle, Bill Cosby) and also the importance on education that the name “Cosby” holds, this was a true no-brainer for me and also a gift from God to be blessed with the opportunity to work with such dedicated men. With this opportunity, I had to do something that most people are unwilling to do. I had to be willing to fall back and allow someone else to set me on a path towards success. I had to work on rewriting my first book, “Menzuo in the Calling of the Sun Prince,” take direction from their editor and re-invent the story to make it new. Now, I am proud to say that because I stayed humble and kept my mind open to take in new knowledge, the release of my first book will be AMAZING.
With the edits complete and a new twist to the story that will help to make the series more enjoyable, there is a slight name change to the book. It will now be known as, “Menzuo: The Calling of the Sun Prince,” and I am so very proud to have been on this journey to bring you all something that I love so much. My character, Menzuo has been reborn and is on a mission to change the world.
Honestly, this process for book #1 of the series was humbling and amazing. I have learned so much about my own writing style, I have strengthened my knowledge of telling a story and I have also learned how to engage my readers with stronger dialogue within the story. So as I move on to the editing of book #2, “Menzuo S.W. Legend of the Blue Diamond,” I am more prepared to produce another amazing story for you all to dig in to. The excitement that I have with the release of the first book and the events that I will be setting up and attending motivates me to live my dream of getting a book into every school in this country, boys and girls club and community center so that all children can have a new superhero to grow up with.
Please be on the lookout for our slogans in 2015, #TheYearoftheHero and the Re-discover Reading Campaign. Join us on our mission the strengthen literacy and education in our country with our books. There is so much more to come and I cannot wait to share it with you all.
As I continue my journey as an author, motivational speaker and now publisher of Indie Authors under my publishing company, 4King Edward Enterprises, Publishing, I tend to sit back and think about what is really behind my drive towards reaching my personal successes in life. I believe that my drive stems from my love of education and also for helping to change people’s lives for the better.
As I have grown as an author, I have made several mistakes that have helped me to make my path moving forward so much easier to travel. I have always been the type of person to think outside of the box. When I first started writing, I thought the only way to become a published author was through the traditional ways of doing it. Go out and find an agent, reach out to the known publishing companies, get that publishers contract and upfront advance that looks so great then move forward towards reaching the New York Times Best Seller’s list then I realized that there was another way.
After searching online and talking to several of my friends who have also published books, I found out that I could self-publish my own work, all that this took was for me to educate myself a little then move forward with the process. Once I published my next book, I found out how easy it was for me and then the light bulb went off in my head. “I can do this on my own and help others publish their work as well. I can open my own Print On Demand Publishing Company,” and that is exactly where I am today.
I took the past two years to research several P.O.D. companies and also how they go about building up their own business as a publisher. I started off by publishing my own books, developed my website and after I made myself known through hosting several events and attending book fairs, I decided that it was time for me to move on to help others publish their books through my company.
It is a great feeling to help others reach their goals as authors as I continue to do the same. For me, it doesn’t seem right to hoard knowledge on how to break into the field of becoming an author. I believe that it is best to have as many people feel the same type of fulfillment as I have when I became a published author.
I don’t do it for the accolades or the fame, because both of those things come and go. I do what I do because I love the arts and also for my own personal fulfillment of helping others reach their goals. If you have a story to tell or a poem to share and you want to do it by reaching the masses with it becoming a book, then why not help someone if you have the knowledge to do so? That is what drives me towards success, helping others. I hope that this helps to explain just a little of my journey. Good luck with your journey to success.
As I am moving forward with realizing my dream of owning my own publishing company, I have come to the realization that I cannot allow two things to hold me back from reaching for success. Those two things are Fear and Doubt. Many people allow these two things to stop them from moving forward in life and I will never allow myself to be one of those people. As I look at these two obstacles, I can honestly say that I face them with each and every step that I take as I reach for success.
FEARS & DOUBTS
Fears and doubts are real and it they are always present when you want something. Your fears and doubts can make you stop your journey, they can beat you down to a point to where you no longer believe in yourself and they both can control the outcome of your path in life...that is, if you allow them to work in that way. As a young man, I was taught and constantly told to always face my fears and also my doubts and no matter how bad or how hard things may seems to be, you will see that your fears can be defeated.
So here are my fears and doubts as I move forward with opening my publishing company:
1). Can I honestly open a successful independent publishing company by myself?
2). Will people support my company?
3). Will I have enough money to successfully run my company?
4). Will I have the right resources to compete with other publishing companies?
5). Am I ready to support my own work and the works of other aspiring authors with my company?
These questions are constantly running through my mind, along with several other questions that I have to constantly answer. It's sometimes overwhelming, but then I realize that the journey that I am taking shouldn't be easy, it shouldn't be a comfortable road to travel because if it was, everyone would be doing it.
As I continue to research and talk to other Indie Authors that have opened their own publishing companies to support their work, I look at the Pros and Cons of the business. There are many Pros and not that many Cons, so that eases my fears as I move forward. I realize that this can be done and I am the right person to do it.
I have accomplished many things up to this point and I am very proud that I have not yet allowed fear of doubt to stop my journey. I have published several books, I have written, directed and acted in a very powerful play based on one of my books, I have co-produced and acted in a a movie that was a adaptation of one of my books and I have also opened my own business (4King Edward Enterprises) over the past several years. Because of these accomplishments, I know that I have the personal fortitude to move forward with building upon another dream of mine.
4KE Publishing will be a branch within 4KE Enterprises and will be the home of all future books from myself and other aspiring Indie authors that will be chosen to be published by the company. My goal is to reach as many people with not only my books, but other people's books as well. We all have voices, stories and poems that want to be heard so it is my job to provide this opportunity to others.
Now do I have fears and do I have doubts, of course, but the real question is, am I afraid to face them...NO I AM NOT! I am ready for whatever is placed in front of me, because I know that those fears and doubts are not as bad as I think they are as long as I face them head on.
In June, I had the craziest health scare that I have ever experienced in my life. I came down with something known as Bell’s Palsy. What this disease does, is completely paralyze the entire left side of your face. I lost the ability to blink and also, produce tears. I lost my sense of taste; my hearing was way out of whack, to the point where even the slightest noise, sounded like a train was running through my head; and lastly, I had no energy to function correctly. What made it worse was that the Doctors really had no idea as to what the root cause of this could have been. I was tested for everything under the sun and luckily, everything came back negative.
After talking to my wife and several people around me, I came to the realization that the root-cause of me having Bell’s Palsy, was…ME!!! While I had no choice but to stay at home and try to recover, I took that time to look back at the past several months and analyzed what I was doing to myself. #1. I wasn’t eating right at all. Mostly, one meal a day and eating pure junk for a snack (Yes, a damn honey bun and a Sweat Tea); #2. I wasn’t giving myself enough rest (Going to bed around 1:30am and even as late as 3am and waking up for 7am). And #3. I my workload was PACKED. Working fulltime, writing books, holding events, working on a play, spending quality time with my family and also coaching a little league soccer team (CAN YOU SAY CRAZY!!!) It was no wonder that my body shut down on me.
Luckily, after 6 weeks, and after taking the advice from my wife and family members, I forced myself to relax and restructure my habits to have healthier lifestyle of living. The first step was to realize that I AM NOT JESUS AND I CANNOT DO EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN; Second, I had to prioritize my life and restructure my schedule so that I didn’t put myself back in the bed; and lastly, I have to focus on living a healthier lifestyle.
I have taken charge of my first two steps to recovering fully and now I am focused and I mean FOCUSED on my final step of living a healthier lifestyle. You know God is great when he continues to send the right people to knock on your door to help you achieve your goals. I believe that God continued to push my close friend, college roommate and AMAZING Fitness guru, Marcus Austin into my life to introduce the Body By Vi program into my life. The timing couldn’t be better. After speaking to him about the challenges that I have faced, he has graciously taken me under his wing and has gotten me connected into this amazing program.
I am now beginning my Body By Vi, 90 Day challenge to living a better life and I am so thankful of Marcus for believing in me.
I want everyone to know about this program because I know that many of us want to live healthier. Some may want to lose weight. Others may want to trim up or build muscle or maybe you just want to feel good about yourself. If you fall into any of these categories, I encourage you to look into this program and join me in transforming your life. There are no gimmicks or tricks to this. It’s all about healthy living and I know that from my past experience, I want to be here to enjoy life.
If anyone would like to know more about this program, please take a look at it through my site: http://ktdodds.bodybyvi.com/. There will be more information to come about this in the next day or so, but let’s all be healthy together. Tomorrow is not promised. God Bless.
When Keshawn Dodd was 18, his best friend died from cancer. The loss was severe and catapulted him into what has become his life mission.
“I want people to understand that life is precious,” said the educator, community activist, life coach, husband, and father. He also wants them to know that, no matter what someone’s situation is, “there are people who believe in you, and your faith will carry you through.”
His career has included teaching in two Springfield elementary schools as well as working as an aide for former Springfield Mayor Charles Ryan. He is director of Greek organizations and advisor for the Student Government Assoc. at American International College. He is also a motivational speaker and author of three books and a play titled Who Is On My Side, which are produced through his company, 4King Edward Enterprises Inc.
“My focus with 4King is to develop the minds of youth in education, entrepreneurship, and life,” Dodds said. “I want to make sure today’s young people become better than our current generation. I am big on growth.”
His personal mantra, which he recites daily, “you are better than what you think you are.” He encourages others to adopt it, too.
“It helps me to put things in perspective and know that I can handle anything that comes my way,” he said.
His friend’s death propelled him to write his first book about a character (himself) who morphs into a superhero with overwhelming responsibilities and battles an evil character (the cancer). He read the manuscript to students at Homer Street School when he was teaching there, and their response was so enthusiastic, he ended up publishing it and writing additional manuscripts.
Dodds has been extremely active in civic affairs, is keeper of records for the Springfield Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and has won a bevy of awards, including the 2012 Springfield Cultural Council Artists Fellowship, the Springfield Public Schools Beacon Award, and the Boston Globe All Scholastic Award.
